Pilot boat off the coast of Vlissingen, the Netherlands. A pilot boat is a boat that brings a pilot aboard a seagoing ship. The pilot boat sails at sea, in a fixed position, this is called a cross post.
The tasks of the pilot go back to classical antiquity when local fishermen helped bring incoming ships safely to shore. The oldest reference to pilots comes from the 7th century BC. Afterwards, pilots were appointed by the port authorities to ensure that pilotage was regulated, that there were competent pilots and that the captains of ships had sufficient assurance that the pilot was competent.
Although the pilots needed a licence from the port to carry out their work, they often remained independent. They therefore always needed their own fast transport, which was often their fishing vessels. The fishing boats were just not suitable for piloting. An alternative was necessary, the pilot boats were developed as fast, light boats.
