About ‘Picturesque part of Wijk bij Duurstede - Mazijk’ by Mart Houtman

De Mazijk, looking towards the Roman Catholic church. This picturesque part of Wijk bij Duurstede still captures the imagination. The name Mazijk adorned a canal (originally called Arkgracht) which, in the mid-15th century, was the connecting road between Duurstede Castle and the church. David of Burgundy, who was the illegitimate son of Philip the Good and who, through various political intrigues, was appointed Bishop of Utrecht, lived in the historic Duurstede Castle.
In the seventeenth century, the canal was filled in. Mazijk is a name from the 16th century, derived from the Maseijck family, who lived there.
