About ‘Petra's Guardian’ by Roy Mosterd

Against the backdrop of Petra’s impressive rock facades, a camel waits quietly amongst the ancient columns. The warm hues of the sandstone and the colourful fabrics on the saddle lend the scene a distinctly Jordanian atmosphere.
Petra, one of the Middle East’s most famous archaeological sites, was carved out of the rock by the Nabataeans over two thousand years ago. The monumental temples, pillars and passageways make this place one of the most impressive historical cities in the world.
Camels have been linked to life in this region for centuries. In Petra, they are still used to transport visitors through the vast ruins and desert landscapes. Their calm nature and sturdy build make them perfectly suited to the dry and rugged terrain.
This photograph captures a moment where history, culture and everyday life converge. Through the warm tones of the stone and the character of the animal, the image brings a sense of travel and discovery into an interior.
