About ‘Party in Maastricht’ by Nop Briex

Carnival in Maastricht (Maastricht: vastelaovend in Mestreech) is a special form of carnival celebration in the Dutch city of Maastricht. The Maastricht carnival is a combination of Rhineland carnival and Burgundian carnival, with some unique elements, such as the Bónte Störm parade and the street carnival with dozens of zate hermeniekes. The Maastricht carnival attracts a large number of visitors from Limburg and other parts of the Netherlands every year. Deviating from the habit of especially Brabant cities and villages to adopt a different name during carnival, Maastricht will continue to call itself simply Mestreech.

Because of the pandemic, vastelaovend had to skip a year in 2021. This mixed media (collage with paint) was made in the desire of the end of the covid-19 lockdown that is coming up. And then partying. Longing for the luij, pèlskes and plezeer. Mestreech, small but nicer than Paris.
