All the islands of the Azores are largely covered in green nature between and above volcanic soil. Not surprising for an archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean where regular rain showers make for a fresh green landscape.
One such island is São Jorge, an island centrally located in the archipelago. It is long and narrow. And is covered with mountains and a volcano. Almost at its tip in the northwest is the Parque Forestal de las Siete Fuentes. A park full of old, tall trees, large ferns and beautiful fern palms. With winding paths and filtered light.
The park has a mysterious atmosphere. More than that, it gives a sense of eternity and silence. It is in place to wander around and enjoy the silence.
As I walked in the park, I was reminded of Emily Carr's painting Western Forest. Perhaps a bit fuller and with less light. But also full of tall trees, green peaks and an unknown route that invites you to walk further among the tall trees.
