The Pieterskerk is a late Gothic church in the Dutch city of Leiden. Traditionally, it has been the main church of that city.
To its patron saint, St Peter, to whom Jesus says in the Gospel according to Matthew "I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven (..)" the city owes its coat of arms, as well as its nickname Key City.
In 1121, a chapel for the counts of Holland was dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. In its present form, the Pieterskerk came into being for about 180 years from 1390. The building was decommissioned as a church in 1971 and transferred to a private foundation in 1976. Since a major restoration, which took place between 1978 and 1982, the Pieterskerk is rented out for all kinds of events. Another major restoration took place between 2001 and 2010.
