In the middle of the capital is the Royal Palace Amsterdam, the official reception palace of King Willem-Alexander. The Palace is the largest and most prestigious building of the seventeenth century, making it one of the most important monuments in the Netherlands.
Originally it was not built as a palace but as the city hall of Amsterdam. Architect Jacob van Campen designed a building that reflected the great power and wealth of Amsterdam in the seventeenth century.
The Palace is structurally open to visitors. It is the setting for the most important events of the monarchy: the royal wedding and the abdication and inauguration of the Head of State of the Netherlands.
