An extraordinary encounter with an orca in the icy fjords of Norway. From a distance, we watched him resting. Orcas allow one hemisphere of the brain to "sleep" while the other remains active. The animal would occasionally surface with its snout and then exhale through its blowhole. For minutes I stood ready with my camera on a small rocking boat to finally get this close-up. If you look closely, you can see his closed eye and the droplets from his exhalation.
