This is one of several images I have made of a wonderful local landmark that is no longer there! This tractor was placed on display on a rock plinth by the side of the road in Umbria, Italy. As you can see it had been carefully positioned, with a smaller rock levelling its caterpillar tracks. The model is a Breda 75 horsepower crawler tractor, made in Italy, and has obviously been weathering for some years as it is very rusty. These tractors were often used during the Second World War and this area saw quite a lot of action during that period so it is not impossible this tractor has a history waiting to be discovered.
It is difficult to find any images or the details for the tractor on the web other than the suggestion that the model is quite rare and a collectors item. I did find an advertisement for these tractors in the Sydney Morning Herald (NSW 1842-1952) from Wednesday 13 September 1950 with the headline Now available in Australia ... Europe's best tractor.
With this image I have tried to give a feel for the position of the tractor and how it has been put on display. In the background are the mountains on the other side of Lago Trasimeno.
Born in the South of England I now live half way up a mountain in Umbria, Italy. I work from my art studio looking out over fabulous views of the Italian countryside. I am so happy to share my artwork with you.
