About the artwork

Nose of a Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawk with shark teeth.

Serial number: 42-105192
Registration number: NL85104

The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk was an American fighter aircraft of World War II. The prototype made its first flight on Oct. 15, 1938, and the aircraft was used until the end of World War II. A total of 13,738 aircraft were produced until November 1944, at the Curtiss plant in Buffalo, New York.

The design was derived from the P-36 Hawk, allowing the aircraft to enter production quickly. In the United States, the aircraft was known as the Warhawk, while in the Soviet Union and the United Kingdom it was called Tomahawk or Kittyhawk, depending on the version.

The aircraft was not deployed over Europe, but it was deployed over North Africa and in Asia. It was used as a fighter, escort fighter and fighter-bomber. Among its users was the Military Aviation of the Royal Dutch East Indies Army, which had the type in service from 1942 to 1949.

This photo was taken Nov. 13, 2016, during the Aviation Nation Airshow at Nellis Air Force Base.
