This digital painting is an adaptation of a photograph taken near Skútustaðir on the shore of the famous lake Myvatn in northern Iceland. A volcanic wonderland that rubs up against the Arctic Circle.
Is it water or is it land? In fact it is a mixture of the two, with pools and islets, marshes and streams. There are no trees, but plenty of grasses, mosses, sedum and low shrubs.
The snow-capped mountain in the distance is the Sellandafjall, almost a kilometer high. Volcanologists call it a "tuff cliff", a volcano that owes its broad, round shape to the ice sheet that lay over it long ago.
The dark clouds, with a streak of light on the horizon, add some extra visual drama to this ultimate area of silence. Magnificent desolation, Buzz Aldrin would call it; he was talking about the Moon but it equally try about this strange water land.
But of course it is not completely deserted here, because birds are everywhere.
