Nieuwmarkt is a square in the centre of Amsterdam, between Geldersekade and Kloveniersburgwal. It borders the Zeedijk to the north and the Sint Antoniesbreestraat to the south and forms the centre of the Nieuwmarkt neighbourhood.
At its centre is the monumental Waag. Surrounding the square are monumental buildings, many catering establishments, a supermarket and the residential complex for the elderly, (the) Flesseman.
There is a daily market, an organic market on Saturdays, and an antiques, curios and book market on Sundays in the summer months. In spring, in the week preceding King's Day, there are the "April festivities" with a neighbourhood breakfast and a nostalgic fair with a carousel, spiegeltent and children's theatre.
The Nieuwmarkt borders the Red Light District, Chinatown and the Lastage. Because the Nieuwmarkt neighbourhood, especially on the Zeedijk, has many Chinese residents and businesses, the street signs in the area are in both Dutch and Chinese characters.
Underneath the square has been the Bijleveldsche lock since 1425.
