The city of Naples is unique. The centre of Naples consists of a maze of narrow, dark alleyways with a charm all of their own. The layout of the historic centre, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, still corresponds to that of the Greek colony of Neapolis and visitors can follow the ancient streets. In some places, the remains of the old city walls and city gates are still clearly recognisable.
This photo was taken from the "Passaggio Castel dell'Ovo", the entrance to the oldest castle in the city of Naples - the Castel dell'Ovo. The imposing Castel dell'Ovo is a castle on the island of Megaride off the coast of Naples. The island is connected to the mainland by a 100 metre long causeway. Translated, Castel dell'Ovo means "egg fortress".
From Castel dell'Ovo you have a sweeping view of Mount Vesuvius, the Gulf of Naples and Posillipo. Below the castle is the small Santa Lucia marina. There are various restaurants and bars here.
