Mother of Femmy Otten
Femmy Otten worked for nine months, the full duration of her pregnancy, on a wooden version of this sculpture. The revamped marble version also takes nine months. Her nudity is not erotic, but disarming. Without the ballast of clothing, we are all equal: a comforting thought. You feel the gentleness and love the artist put into the execution.
With her hand, the woman touches the surface of the water. Thus, the water becomes like a fluid pedestal. The woman is lying in a very uncomfortable position. She has exactly a block on her leg: at her feet is a tangle of body parts. At the same time, she seems to be balancing all this. The mother figure possesses the primal power of giving life and is at the same time vulnerable.
This sculpture is part of the Beaufort Triennial 2024. Photo taken in Ostend, Boulevard Leopold II on 7 August 2024.
