This memorial commemorates the 117 Allied airmen who were killed around Harderwijk in the Second World War. Many of the aircrafts crashed into the IJsselmeer after which the victims were washed ashore or went missing.
I took this photo in Harderwijk, on the edge of the Veluwemeer in September 2021, during a sunset that wasn't even that great. Only after the sun had set behind the horizon the colours in the sky exploded. I had already packed my bag, but did not know how quickly I had to set everything up again. For minutes it went from orange to purple and back again.
