Tips for use

About ‘Monument @ Bangkok, Thailand’ by Travel Tips and Stories

This is the impressive King Rama I Monument at the foot of the Memorial Bridge (Phra Phuttha Yodfa Bridge) in Bangkok.
Historical background and facts
The Founder of Bangkok: The monument is dedicated to King Phra Phuttayotfa Chulalok (Rama I), the founder of the current Chakri dynasty. In 1782, he moved the capital to the east bank of the river, thereby founding the Bangkok we know today.
The Design: The bronze statue depicts the king seated on his throne, dressed in traditional royal robes with his hands resting on a sword. The monument was designed by the legendary Thai prince Narisara and cast under the supervision of the famous Italian sculptor Corrado Feroci (known in Thailand as Silpa Bhirasri).
The Unveiling: The monument was officially unveiled on 6 April 1932 by King Rama VII. This coincided exactly with the 150th anniversary of the founding of Bangkok and the opening of the adjacent Memorial Bridge.
