Medieval Casle 02-HMS:Castles are medieval buildings that were defensive houses for powerful people. They can be made of wood, stone or brick, and some were used for hundreds of years. Thousands of castles were built throughout Europe, the Middle East and Japan with different design styles. Today, most castles are ruins and many are popular tourist attractions.
In England and Wales the castles were first put into service by the invading Norsemen under Duke William in 1066. They formed a base for troops to control the area and, over time, helped the owner of the castle to manage their land. Castles were designed to be impressive: their enormous defences deterred attackers and showed the strength of the owner.
A few troops in a castle could defend themselves against a much larger army. The most common method of occupying a castle is to besiege or storm it. Each had problems. Storming a castle would kill many of the attackers, but a siege would take a long time. Both methods sometimes failed.
