About "Market Square Rotterdam"

by Leo Luijten

About the artwork

An impressionistic representation of the market on the Binnenrotte in Rotterdam with on the left a piece of the market hall.
The Binnenrotte is the largest square in Rotterdam. It is also the place where Rotterdam originated. Originally the Binnenrotte was part of the river Rotte. In 1871 the Rotte was dammed here for the construction of a railway viaduct. The viaduct was later demolished again for the construction of the Willemsspoortunnel. Nowadays the Binnenrotteplein is a lively town square with one of the largest markets in the Netherlands on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

On the Binnenrotte there are a number of striking buildings such as the Market Hall, the Central Library, the Cube Houses and the Grote- or Sint-Laurenskerk. Rotterdam Blaak Station is located on and under the square. The Binnenrotte is therefore easy to reach by train, metro, tram and bus. There is also a free bicycle shed and public toilet. Under the adjacent Market Hall there is also a large parking garage.
