Jökulsárlón is the best known and largest glacier lake in Iceland. It is located south of the Vatnajökull glacier between the national park Skaftafell and the town of Höfn. The glacier lake is quite new, as it was only created in the years 1934-1935. However, the lake grew rapidly from 7.9 km² in 1975 to at least 23 km² today due to the melting of the glaciers. With a depth of about 250 meters, Jökulsárlón is the deepest lake in the country.
