This breathtaking work shows the world-famous Kinkaku-ji (Rokuon-ji) in Kyoto, better known as the Golden Pavilion. It is an essential part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site 'Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto' and one of Japan's most beloved sights.
The work was captured during the magical twilight, when the sky has a soft purple and pink hue. The castle is literally covered in gold leaf and shines brightly, providing a dramatic contrast to the surrounding nature. The whole scene is perfectly reflected in the calm Kyōko-chi (Mirror Pond).
The composition is beautifully accentuated by a small island with a typical Japanese pine tree in the foreground, whose reflection breaks the symmetry of the gold and water. This work exudes tranquillity, luxury and the timeless beauty of Japanese architecture and garden art.
