About the artwork

"Workmen in front of an inn" by Isaac van Ostade from 1645 shows a vivid scene of everyday life in the 17th century. In this painting, we see a group of workmen and peasants gathering in front of a rural inn. The inn, with its thatched roof and wooden facade, forms the background of the scene.

In the foreground, several figures are depicted engaged in everyday activities. Some men are standing or sitting around a table and seem to be enjoying a well-earned break. They are drinking and talking, creating a sense of community and camaraderie. On the right side of the painting, a man can be seen pushing a cart with goods, while another man is busy tending a horse.

The atmosphere in the painting is enhanced by the detailed depiction of clothing, facial expressions and the surroundings. The colours are muted and earthy, adding to the realistic and rustic look of the work. With this painting, Isaac van Ostade has managed to capture a snapshot of rural life in his time, full of human interaction and daily activities.

Isaac Jansz. van Ostade (baptised Haarlem, 2 June 1621 - buried there, 16 October 1649) was a Dutch painter and draughtsman belonging to the Dutch School. As a painter, he was active in Haarlem from 1629. In 1643, he was admitted to the Haarlem Guild of St Luke. About'100 paintings by Van Ostade are known, including mainly genre pieces, landscapes and portraits.
