About ‘India: Desert Festival 2017 (Jaisalmer)’ by Maarten Verhees

Het Jaisalmer Desert Festival is een jaarlijks evenement dat plaatsvindt in de maand februari in Jaisalmer. Het wordt gehouden in de hindoe-maand Magh (februari), drie dagen voorafgaand aan de volle maan. Het festival wordt gevierd te midden van de prachtige duinen van de Thar-woestijn in de Sam-duinen. Romantisch, afgelegen en onbedorven, komt de locatie tot leven tijdens het driedaagse extravaganza van de geneugten van de woestijn.Niet veel mensen zijn op de hoogte van de geschiedenis of legende van het woestijnfestival in Jaisalmer. Zoals legendes gaan; Heer Krishna, heerser van de Yadav-gemeenschap, vertelde Arjuna (een van de Pandava's) dat een opvolger die tot de gemeenschap van de Yadav behoort zijn koninkrijk op de Trikuta-heuvel zal opzetten.In het jaar 1196 kwam de voorspelling van de Heer Krishna in vervulling toen Rawal Jaiswal, een afstammeling van de Yadav-clan, zijn koninkrijk vestigde in Jaisalmer. Vieringen werden georganiseerd door het hele koninkrijk, toen de mensen kwamen te weten dat de profetie is uitgekomen. De vieringen ontwikkelden zich al snel tot een festival dat nu elk jaar wordt georganiseerd. De overheid begon met het vermarkten van het levendige festival als internationale tekenbezoeker van de woestijnstad.
