This work, captured in the Groningen countryside, shows the sheer power and grandeur of nature. The looming sky slowly slides across the vast wheat field, as the last rays of sunlight just barely touch the crop. Tractor tracks cut through the field, leading your gaze to the horizon, where a row of trees and a lone farmhouse hold out against the approaching violence of nature. What makes this image unique are the subtle movements in the grain, the tension in the air and the stillness before the storm - almost palpable.
The inspiration for this work came during a trip through the endless polders in North-East Groningen. Dark clouds gathered while the sun stayed low. That contrast between light and dark, calm and menace, fascinated me. I wanted to capture the power of that moment - the moment when you feel nature is about to bring something great.
The atmosphere is raw, powerful and poetic at the same time. The work exudes a cool feeling, but also admiration for the uncontrollable elements around us. It reminds me how insignificant we are sometimes.
Photographically, I have used a slightly slower shutter speed to make the wind subtly visible in the grain, while the menace in the sky remains intact. This work is powerful in an interior with a love of nature, vastness and the rugged beauty of the Netherlands - perfect for those who love a landscape that tells stories.
