The Forbidden City was the place from which the Chinese emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasty ruled their empire. The city, located in the Chinese capital Beijing, was built and completed under the emperor Yongle in 1422. The palace complex is now popularly referred to as Gugong (Imperial Palace). Most of the buildings on display today date from the 18th century.
In 1961 the Imperial Palace was declared a monument by the Chinese State. In 1987 it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site at the 11th session of the World Heritage Commission.
Erich Kips (17 January 1869 in Berlin, Germany, 26 September 1945) was a German painter. In 1889 Erich Kips studied painting at the art academy in Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg.
Erich Kips was active as a figure painter at the beginning of his career. As a genre painter he also made many allegorical representations and later devoted himself intensively to landscape painting and cityscapes, especially harbour and marine subjects. Also murals and graphics are part of his work.
