The Hallgrimskirkja has the name of being Iceland's most impressive building. It is indeed a fascinating church, and with its 73 meters it is the largest in the country. Because the Hallgrimskirkja also stands on a hill, the tower towers impressively above the city. The church was designed by Gudjon Samuelsson, a famous state architect. The construction eventually took more than forty years (1945-1988).
The house of worship is named after Hallgrimur Pétursson, a glorious poet and clergyman who lived at the beginning of the 17th century, and who is known in Iceland for his hymns. With its modernist, icy, white appearance, the Hallgrimskirkja is completely at home in the area and stands out from the changing cloud skies.
