About ‘Green mill on the quay’ by Thijs Friederich

A green-and-black windmill stands in the warm, slanting light of an early spring morning. A cobbled path runs alongside a wooden fence towards the mill, with ditches and traditional wooden buildings in the background. Everything exudes tranquillity and craftsmanship — this could have been a painting from the Golden Age. The Zaanse Schans has two sides: the bustling tourist side and the quiet, early morning side. I always opt for the latter. At this hour, there was no one else around, the light was beautifully low and the atmosphere was exactly as I wanted it. The green windmill glowed in the morning light and I felt as though I had stepped back in time for a moment.
