Yellowstone National Park is a national park in the United States, mainly in Wyoming, but with small portions in the neighbouring states of Montana and Idaho. Yellowstone has an area of 8983 km², making it at once one of the largest national parks in the United States. The average altitude in the park is 2440 metres. Most of the park consists of forest in Wyoming. The park is home to many animal species, including bison, deer, several species of bear, coyotes and wolves. The park contains over 800 kilometres of paved roads and twice as many kilometres in hiking trails. To the south, Yellowstone connects to Grand Teton National Park.
Grand Prismatic Spring is a hot spring in the Midway Geyser Basin in the US National Park Yellowstone. The spring is 75 by 90 metres and has a depth of 49 metres. The water has a constant temperature of about 70°C. An average of 2,000 litres of water per minute is released from the spring.
Because the water is extremely pure, it has a deep blue colour. The orange colour on the sides is caused by bacteria living in the microbial mats along the edges of the spring, where the water has cooled sufficiently.
The first mention of probably this spring was in 1839.
