St George (Georgius) of Cappadocia or St George († 23 April 303) is a martyr and saint. Patron (patron saint) of England since 1222, St George is traditionally depicted with a dragon, which he is said to have killed. In this, the dragon symbolises paganism. Defeating the dragon symbolises the conversion of a pagan country or city to Christianity. Gillis Coignet, Congnet or Quiniet (Antwerp c. 1542- Hamburg 1599) was a Southern Dutch Renaissance painter. He painted mythological and historical tableaux. In 1584, Gillis became dean of the St-Lucas guild in Antwerp. Gillis Coignet's work betrays the influence of the Venetian school and more specifically of Titian and Tintoretto. The quick keys and the diversity of tonality are particularly reminiscent of Titian's later work.
