About ‘General Owl’ by Bert Hooijer

General Owl A beautiful portrait of an owl in an old general's suit. I make my works all by myself and do not use AI programmes (artificial intelligence). Every detail is applied by myself. Therefore, I can sometimes spend hours creating a particular image.

The owls (Strigiformes) are an order of solitary birds with mostly nocturnal lifestyles. In many owls, the eyes are at the front of the head, giving them a large binocular field of vision in which they can see depth. Owls have well-developed ears, which are widely spaced, enabling them to determine the direction from which a sound is coming. These characteristics make owls good hunters. Because of their nocturnal lifestyle, they are sometimes called nocturnal predators. The order is divided into two families: the true owls (Strigidae) and the barn owls (Tytonidae), of which there is only one representative in Europe (the barn owl). Larger species hunt small mammals and birds, while other species eat mainly insects. Owls are nomadic, opportunistic breeding birds that can get large clutches when food is abundant. Owls play an important role in mythology, symbolism and literature. In Western cultures, owls are often associated with wisdom and vigilance. This association can be traced back to Greek mythology, where Athene, the goddess of wisdom, was symbolised and accompanied by an owl (the owl of Athens).
