The Fort Zeelandia got its name when it was captured by the Zeeland admiral Abraham Crijnssen in 1667. It is where the first settlers entered the country and therefore was the beginning of the creation of the state of Suriname. Its location on the Suriname River not only has historical significance, but still today provides a beautiful view from the bastions of the Fort.
