The best-known appearance of the fly agaric is a dark red hat with white dots. The white dots are remnants of the overall shell (velum universale) in which the mushroom was 'locked up' before it rose from the ground. These rinse off the hat quite quickly in rainy weather. However, the color of the hat is variable and can vary from red to orange with yellow tones.
