On Monday 10 February 2020 Schoonhoven had to deal with high tide in the Lek. This because of storm Ciara. Therefore after 25 years the Veerpoort had to be closed as well. Luckily everything was not too bad, and the water dropped to a few hours.
In rivers and smaller streams flooding is said to occur when the water level exceeds the normal measured values for a longer period of time (several days). They usually have - depending on the shape of the catchment - a seasonal accumulation, roughly coinciding with the melting of the snow or after heavy summer rains. If the water level rises sharply, inland navigation must first be halted; further rises may lead to flooding.
