How wonderful the evenings are in Deshaies on Basse-Terre in Guadeloupe, where the British hit series "Death in Paradise" was filmed! Since then, there have been a few more bars along the main street, and series fans from all over the world enjoy the sunset over the picturesque bay on small terraces.
Two of Basse-Terre's most beautiful beaches are located nearby: the Plage de la Grande Anse and the lesser-known Anse de la Perle, which is smaller and more intimate. Deshaies is also famous for its Jardin Botanique, which opened in 2001. On the 1.5 kilometre circular path through the seven-hectare botanical garden, you can discover the flora and fauna of the Caribbean and other tropical regions.
You can discover macaws, lorikeet and honey parrots up close in large aviaries. Flamingos strut through a pond with koi carp and peck for food with their large beaks. An aboretum introduces you to giant strangler figs and prickly fromager trees. Anthuriums and heliconias bloom under the travellers' tree and the desert rose in the arid themed garden. But Deshaies is at its most beautiful in the evening, when the day in the tropics bids farewell with soft light.
