“Ember Hydrangea I” by Ember Bloom

“Ember Hydrangea I” opens the hydrangea series with a subtle yet captivating play of light. The dense cluster of flowers initially appears almost entirely as a dark silhouette, before warm reflections of light in golden yellow, orange and deep red break through between the overlapping petals.

In contrast to the strictly radially structured motifs of the previous series, an organic composition emerges here from numerous individual blooms. The light seems to originate from within the hydrangea and finds its way out only through narrow gaps and semi-transparent petals. This creates an extraordinary sense of depth and an almost glowing effect, reminiscent of smouldering embers beneath a dark surface.

The entirely black background completely isolates the flower head and directs the viewer’s gaze exclusively towards the fascinating interplay between light and shadow. The minimalist use of light lends the work a calm, almost meditative atmosphere and emphasises the hydrangea’s natural elegance.

As the first piece in the EMBER BLOOM – Hydrangea series, ‘Ember Hydrangea I’ marks the beginning of a new creative direction. Whilst earlier series emphasised the delicate architecture of individual flowers, here, for the first time, the focus is on the complex structure of an entire flower cluster, opening up new possibilities for botanical light art.
