Edward Robert Hughes (1851-1914) was a British painter of the late 19th and early 20th century who was close to the Pre-Raphaelite and Symbolist styles. He was a nephew of the well-known Pre-Raphaelite Arthur Hughes and worked for a time as an assistant to William Holman Hunt. Hughes is particularly known for his luminous watercolours, in which he often depicted dreamy, mystical scenes with idealised figures and allegorical themes. His most famous works include *Night with Her Train of Stars*. His style is characterised by technical finesse, delicate colouring and a poetic atmosphere.
