Atheris ceratophora is a rare member of the genus tree-adders, a group of venomous snakes found in Africa. It is a species endemic to a select number of tropical and subtropical mountain forests in Tanzania. Finding this animal was quite a challenge, but the joy was all the greater when we finally found and were able to photograph one. The small horned, upright scales above the eyes make the relatively small snake (adults are 40 to 55 centimetres long) look like a mini dragon. In this picture taken in the night darkness, I deliberately chose a play between light and dark to give the picture a slightly more mysterious character befitting this viper's stealthy lifestyle.
