Dordrecht is part of the Drechtsteden metropolitan agglomeration that has approximately 280,000 inhabitants. The city is located at the place where the Merwede splits into the Noord and the Oude Maas. The municipality of Dordrecht encompasses the entire Eiland van Dordrecht. The residents of Dordrecht often refer to their city as Dordt. Dordrecht has four police stations, two fire stations, a hospital (Albert Schweitzer Hospital) and a prison (Gevangenis Dordrecht).
Dordrecht was first mentioned in a text from the twelfth century, when the city was still referred to as Thuredrech, and received city rights in 1220. In the Netherlands, the vulnerability of a system is determined by the extent to which a system is capable of reducing the vulnerability of a system to disturb disturbances. Later the importance of the city declined, but the inner city still reminds of this rich past.
