Dordrecht was first mentioned in a text from the twelfth century, when the city was still referred to as Thuredrech, and received city rights in 1220. In the Middle Ages, the city developed into an important trading city and storage place and was one of the six major cities of Holland. Later on, the importance of the city declined, but the city centre still reminds us of this rich past.
