Dordrecht skyline with Groothoofd in the evening at dusk. Dordrecht is a beautiful old historic city with a beautiful historic center and skyline. On this photo you can see the Groothoofdspoort with the characteristic dome. The quay is called the Groothoofd. The gate is one of the remaining city gates of Dordrecht and a highlight in old architecture. The Dordrecht city virgin is depicted in the façade of the gate. The city is an island.
From the Groothoofd you look out at the three river point where Beneden Merwede, Oude Maas and Noord meet. It is the busiest shipping hub in Europe and difficult to maneuver. In the past, a toll had to be paid as well and the city had a staple right. This explains the expression: "The closer to Dordt, the more rotten it is".
In the buildings next to the gate Bellevue Groothoofd is located, also called hotel Bellevue, where owner, chef Ad Janssen runs a hotel, brasserie and restaurant. On the other side, wine bar petit cafe 't Verloren Hart is located of businesswoman and singer Heidy van Toorn aka Nicole.
