Have you ever looked at a sunflower very closely? I find it magical. A sunflower that is made up of all these tiny flowers that form a pattern together and that, almost, all bloom at the same time. The heart of a sunflower consists of a 'head' that is filled with tiny flowers that are very close together. They form a pattern that is the same in every sunflower. These are the real flowers. The yellow leaves are bracts, which form a frame for the head of flowers. They attract insects to the flowers. Handy, then, that they are in a nice circle around it. In the picture, you can clearly see that the flowers start flowering from the outside inwards. So the total flowering time of one sunflower is longer than that of each individual flower. Nature's clever trick! Flowers always make me curious. How are they put together? Is it one or are there secretly more? Are there patterns, unexpected colours? What do I see when I look really closely?
