About "Dahlias against the light"

by Thomas Riess

About the artwork

Dahlias against a hazy background. The first written records can be found with Francisco Hernandez, who was a Spanish doctor at the end of the 16th century. In 1791, the first dahlia seeds were finally sent from Mexico to Spain - and in the same year, a dahlia bloomed in Europe for the first time! Since then, it has been hard to imagine the European garden landscape without this beautiful flowering splendour. Due to its beauty, the dahlia quickly spread throughout Europe. The great German writer and poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in particular is said to have taken a liking to dahlias and was able to choose from 42 different varieties for his garden in Weimar. At that time, there was also a dahlia variety called Goethe, which is described as multi-flowered and purple-coloured. It is now impossible to imagine German gardens and balconies without the dahlia. The pretty ornamental plant was given the name "Dahlia" in honour of the botanist Andreas Dahl. A synonym for the genus, which is rarely used in Germany, is the name "Georgine" after the botanist Johann Gottlieb Georgi.
