About "Cross channel bridge"

About the artwork

One of the many cross-channel bridges in Schwerin Palace Gardens. The cross canal in Schwerin Palace Gardens is one of the most impressive design elements of the historic park surrounding Schwerin Palace. It was laid out in the 18th century as part of the Baroque remodelling of the palace gardens and reflects the spirit of the era, in which symmetry, perspective and the combination of architecture and nature played a central role.

The canal takes its name from its cross-shaped layout: two straight arms of water intersect at right angles, forming a geometric centre that blends harmoniously into the overall composition of the garden. From the banks of the Kreuzkanal, there are delightful views - on the one hand of the magnificent Schwerin Castle, and on the other of the wide garden areas, avenues and lines of sight that open up in all directions.

The Kreuzkanal was not only used for decorative purposes, but also to showcase water as a living design element. The smooth water reflected the surrounding trees, sculptures and garden architecture, creating an interplay of light and reflection that is particularly attractive when the seasons change.

Today, the Kreuzkanal is one of the most popular spots in Schwerin's palace gardens. It invites visitors to linger and stroll and at the same time conveys a vivid impression of the baroque garden art that is still preserved and cultivated in Schwerin today.
