Jewelry of Zeeland (The Netherlands) descent a so-called Zeeuwse Knoop. Placed here on a St. Jacob's shell. The Zeeland knot has a history dating back to the end of the seventeenth century, the time of Michiel De Ruyter. At the time, the men wore the buttons on their shirts, jackets or on their collar as a 'throat button'. Later the women also wore it as jewelry, for example as a hatpin or as a brooch. The buttons were made of silver or gold and were a status symbol at the time: the bigger the button, the richer and more important the wearer. According to tradition, the knot is modelled after the flower of the Astrantia or Star Herb, which is also popularly known as the Zeeland knot or bud.
