A watercolour drawing of a Common potoo.
The bird looks rather funny with its large yellow eyes that have uneven pupils. It looks like a caricature but these birds really do look like that. The bird is sitting on a branch.
The background of the drawing is a crumpled paper texture added digitally. The colour is dark purple blue. This colour was chosen because these birds are nocturnal.
This very special bird is found from Mexico to Nicaragua, also in the Greater Antilles. As its name suggests, it is a nocturnal bird. During the day, the bird sits on a branch and is almost invisible due to its camouflage colour as it looks exactly like a branch.
Because this bird hunts at night, it has very large and light-sensitive eyes. Its beak can open very wide and is very broad the beak goes from ear to ear. It catches insects with it.
