About the artwork

Church in Thorn

The Gothic Abbey Church still dominates the skyline of the romantic, white town of Thorn. A graceful legacy of 800 years of female rule. Indeed, ladies of the highest noble rank ruled in the white town. The Abbey Church began as a monastery church after which it became a collegiate church and is now a parish church and museum.

The history of Thorn, also known as the 'white town', goes back as far as the year 975. Thorn used to be a source of prosperity for the whole region until the invasion of the French in 1794. But fortunately, the centuries-old charm can still be found in present-day Thorn.

The Abbey church is a Gothic cross basilica with Romanesque westwork, dating from the 10th century. The interior is baroque with an imposing high altar. Under the presbytery is a Gothic crypt. The interior of the Abbey church was repeatedly remodelled between the 15th and 18th centuries. As a result, features from Renaissance, Baroque and Classicism are present in the church. The neo-Gothic architect P.J.H. Cuypers restored the south side of the church in the 19th century, installing a massive bell tower.
