This peony, formerly known as Paeonia albiflora, is native to Siberia and East Asia, where it grows in steppes and thickets. Horticulturally, it is the most important perennial species of peony, as thousands of cultivars have been selected from it. They are very popular garden plants, of which there are quite a few in the Hortus Leiden. The oldest hybrids of Paeonia lactiflora are called 'Chinese peonies'.
