About ‘Chaumont Viaduct’ by anne droogsma

''The Chaumont viaduct was built in fifteen months between 1855 and 1856. Working day and night, 2,500 labourers and 300 horses made this rapid construction possible for the'époque. Le maître d'ouvrage est la Compagnie des chemins de fer de l'Est et l'architecte Eugène Decomble. Il est édifié pour permettre au chemin de fer d’atteindre la partie haute de la ville. L'e structure consists of 60,000 m³ of masonry. On 31 August 1944, during their retreat, the Germans destroyed two arches of the viaduct (45 metres in length) in order to cut the railway line and d'obstruer la route Chaumont-Auxerre. En raison de l'to the strategic importance of the line, it was quickly restored thanks to a temporary track that came into service on 28 December 1944, and the viaduct was effectively rebuilt on 6 November 1945.

Since 8 June 2012, the viaduct has been illuminated by 430 light-emitting diode (LED) spotlights positioned at the foot of the monument and in its galleries (lighting design by Jean-François Touchard).

Characteristics: The viaduct is 600 metres long and comprises 50 arches, each rising to a height of 52 metres. Its structure consists of piers and abutments running the length of the viaduct, dividing it into ten spans of five arches over 600 metres. Vertically, each arch features a deck of'une largeur de huit mètres soutenu par une arche de plein cintre, elle-même reposant sur deux étages d’arches de contreventement. Cette disposition permet à l'structure designed to absorb the vibrations caused by passing trains and to halve the cross-section of the piers.
