About "Carlsbad | Stara Louka"

by Panorama Streetline

About the artwork

The Stara Louka (german: Alte Wiese) is located on the northern bank of the Teplá River in the spa centre of Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad). It is the most prominent street in the city and, together with its continuation in Spa Street (cz: Lazenska), is considered the main promenade of the spa town. In this area, the Tepla valley is quite narrow and behind the buildings the mountain range already rises, whose forestation we see in the background. For centuries, the magnificent buildings on the Old Meadow have mainly housed hotels, restaurants, cafés and luxury shops. The names of the buildings are still partly German, partly Czech.

Around 1900, Karlovy Vary was considered the most prominent spa in Central Europe. In addition to the European aristocracy, its famous guests included Goethe, Karl Marx, Morzart, Richard Wagner, Atatürk, Bach, Beethoven and Sigmund Freud. The Russian Tsar Peter the Great came to the Bohemian spa town twice. And Goethe let it be known that he could only think of three cities in which he would like to live: Weimar, Rome and Carlsbad. Carlsbad owes its name and origin to the Bohemian king and emperor of the Holy Roman Empire Charles IV, who founded the town around 1350 because he valued the healing properties of the hot springs. A short time later he granted Carlsbad the title of a royal city.
