About "Buddhist traditional ceremony in North Vietnam"

by Silva Wischeropp

About the artwork

This fascinating portrait of a very elderly Vietnamese man was taken during an annual Buddhist temple ceremony, a few kilometres outside Hanoi, in Bac Ninh province.
Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam, close to the border with China. Today, the city is home to about 3.5 million people, its history dates back to the 11th century and it is one of the oldest surviving capitals in the entire Southeast Asian region. Many archaeological finds prove that larger settlements existed in the area as early as the Bronze Age. However, the founding year of the capital Hanoi is considered to be 1010, when King Lý Thái Tổ chose the Dai La citadel as his residence and renamed it Thang Long. Hanoi was occupied several times by different population groups and also did not have the status of a capital city throughout. With the founding and reunification of Vietnam in 1976, the decision was also made to make the city of Hanoi the capital of the country. Even today, many museums and old relics bear witness to the city's eventful history.
