This work combines two of London's most famous sights in a modern, graphic depiction: Buckingham Palace and the Elizabeth Tower with the famous Big Ben bell. The scene is set in a stylised night view, with a greenish-yellow sky enlivened by rays of light and stars. The silhouettes of the buildings stand out clearly against the background, while the River Thames in the foreground rounds off the composition.
London is a city with deep-rooted history and cultural significance. Buckingham Palace as the seat of the monarchy and Elizabeth Tower as a symbol of parliamentary democracy symbolise this duality. The idea behind this picture was to bring these two poles together in a calm, almost timeless scene.
The atmosphere is deliberately reduced and kept graphically clear in order to leave room for interpretation. The work is not intended to overwhelm, but to develop a calm presence through its structure and colour scheme.
